Five Sisters Blues Café is proud to welcome blues musician, The Amazing Jimmi Mayes, to the Belmont- DeVilliers neighborhood in Pensacola, Florida on Thursday, November 7, 2019 at 6:00 p.m.. Mr. Mayes will perform live at Five Sisters Blues Café with The Truth featuring Tony Pasko and Cat Rhodes. Mayes will entertain with his music and stories from his historic career, spanning over fifty years. At the conclusion of the show, Mr. Mayes will have copies of his book, The Amazing Jimmi Mayes: Sideman to the Stars, available for purchase and signing.

 

Jimmi Mayes has a rich history as an entertainer and recording artist; vocalist, drummer and author which he details in a book about his life. Mayes played and toured with Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, Pinetop Perkins, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Robert Junior Lockwood, and more over the course of his career. He backed Marvin Gaye and later became the bandleader for Joey Dee & the Starliters who had a monster hit the “Peppermint Twist” during the time Jimi Hendrix was with them. Mayes became good friends with Jimi Hendrix and eventually he was asked by Jimi Hendrix to record with him. Mayes is on four of Hendrix’s albums. 

 

Mayes makes his home in Jackson, Mississippi and continues his entertaining journey. He published a memoir of his adventures in 2013, The Amazing Jimmi Mayes: Sideman to the Stars and was inducted into the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2018 he was the headliner for “An Evening With the Blues” in Bolzano, Italy. Additionally, he released an exciting new Blues Album “My Whole Life’s A Shuffle” July 2018 recorded at the B.B. King recording studio in Mississippi.

 

Five Sisters Blues Café is located at 421 West Belmont, the former home of Gussie’s Record Shop, on the corner of Belmont and DeVilliers streets. is a restaurant built on some of Pensacola’s deepest musical history right in the heart of historic downtown Pensacola. This corner is the home to the Pensacola’s Mississippi Blues Marker, the second one in the state of Florida which commemorates Pensacola’s musical heritage.
